The Giving Jar is not really a holiday book, but since the whole idea of the holidays is GIVING, I thought this would be an ideal book to keep with our holiday collection.
Unlike Jingles, The Giving Jar is a longer book. It’s for an older, more advanced reader. Better yet read it to your child at bed time.
The Giving Jar is a beautiful story about a young boy name Billy and his Grandmother and involves a very special jar called a Giving Jar.
I can’t giveaway the whole story (honestly this is a book you really should read). Let’s just say that the Giving Jar had great significance to Billy’s Grandmother and with her help Billy was able to pass on a Giving Jar to a mean old lady in the neighborhood name Mrs. Mulgrich. His act of giving changed Mrs. Mulgrich for the better.
Even as Billy grew up Operation Giving Jar was something he and his Grandmother would do often, each time giving to a different person and ultimately changing their life for the better.
This is a poignant story that really spoke to my heart. It was a sad story but it was also a story about love, kindness and many life lessons. The artwork was stunning too.
I love the idea of The Giving Jar and I’m thinking about how I can re-create something like this with my own kids and perhaps give a Giving Jar to someone who needs hope and inspiration.
